JoAnna Serrato is a graduate of Brown University (2009) and the University of Texas School of Law (2015).  She is the daughter of migrant workers and attributes her accomplishments to watching her parents hard work and perseverance throughout her youth. She has a deep respect for giving back which began at Brown University where she developed a college mentoring program, pairing low-income, minority high school students with a college mentor. After Brown, she worked at low-income high schools in San Antonio, Texas.

In law school, JoAnna remained committed to providing services to under-represented communities. She interned with ProBar’s Children’s Project where she gained experience in a specialized area of immigration dealing with forms of relief available to unaccompanied alien children detained in federal custody. She also took part in UT Law’s Immigration Clinic for two semesters. As a student attorney, she advocated on behalf of women and children in deportation proceedings before the San Antonio Immigration Court. JoAnna was awarded a Pro Bono Superstar award two years in a row for having one of the highest number of pro bono hours in her class.

JoAnna is the first in her family to graduate from college and is glad to be back home in the Rio Grande Valley, serving her community.
